If you are offering a specific service, such as a design service or an internet marketing service, chances are that you are just a small website in a pool full of various websites that offer the very same service. Then how do you get traffic to your website? Well simple you advertise, there are various forms of advertising online and when it comes to selling a service, then banner ads and PPC advertising works best. However these two forms of advertising are a double edged sword, they can slice through your competition just as they can slice through your advertising revenue. So you will need to set boundaries and target specific markets. For instance if you are a US based business, it will be a good idea to just focus on the US and European market, people in India wouldn't care much about your design service so you don't want to waste your money on their clicks. On the other had you would probably be willing to pay double for a potential client from the UK to click on your ad, since you have a better chance of converting them to a sale.

Banner ads are another great way to get traffic to your website. You wont need to pay per click just book your ad space for a specified period and enjoy unlimited traffic to your website. However you will need to do some research to find out the best place to put-up your banner ad. An ad for your design service wouldn't do much good on a website that offers engineering information, you would however have better results if you placed your banner ad on a website that had web design tutorials.
Article writing
A good free method that some of the experts in internet marketing utilize is article writing. Writing articles with good content and useful information is a great way to get traffic to your site. Make sure you include links to your website at the bottom of your article. You can submit your articles through a site on the internet that then blasts the article to several article directories, which then creates back links to your site. Search engines like Google love this and it will help you get higher rankings with them and the other search engines too.
Submit your website to as many search engines and directories as possible. This will increase your page rank and in turn direct traffic to your website. These are just a few simple ways to direct targeted traffic to your website and as you can see that attracting traffic to your website is not difficult, but it is certainly time consuming. Don't expect results overnight.
